A defining project to close out 2025.
This series of portraits honors Intel’s original leadership—Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove.
Intel Leadership Series
Robert Noyce · Gordon Moore · Andy Grove
Artist Doug Powell constructs these portraits of Robert Noyce, Gordon Moore, and Andy Grove
entirely from reclaimed computer keys—the physical remnants of the digital language that define modern computing.
A single computer key represents a basic unit of information: simple on its own, yet powerful when combined with others. In these mosaics, thousands of individual keys assemble into a unified image, reflecting how complex systems emerge from many precise components working together.
Each portrait contains approximately 7,000 recycled computer keys and required roughly 150 hours of hand assembly. Every key is individually placed to build tone, structure, and depth, transforming
discarded fragments of hardware into a human likeness. The image emerges gradually through thousands of deliberate placements.
The material itself becomes part of the meaning. Keys once used to create code, communication, and
ideas are reassembled to form the people whose leadership helped shape the technological landscape behind them.
As Powell explains:
“I want the viewer to consider the immense number of thoughts, ideas, and inspirations that have passed through something as simple as a computer key.”
Through this process, the portraits reconnect the physical tools of computing with the individuals whose ideas helped define the digital age—thousands of small elements aligned to form a lasting image
of innovation.
