I
finished this American flag mosaic in my studio September 14, 2026.
Only afterward did I discover that day marks 212 years since Francis
Scott Key saw the flag still flying over Fort McHenry after a night
of British bombardment—the sight that inspired “The Star-Spangled
Banner.”
Hidden
among the recycled computer keys are the Pledge of Allegiance and two
passages from Key’s words:
“And
the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof
through the night that our flag was still there.”
“’Tis
the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O’er the land of
the free and the home of the brave!”
Completely
unplanned. Sometimes the universe has a way of adding its own
finishing touch.
